Majority of residents in five MENA countries want next U.S. president to reduce conflict, tension in the Middle East
Most residents across these five countries – including Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates – say they are following the current U.S. election closely
Washington, DC, August 8, 2024 – A new Ipsos poll conducted in five Middle Eastern and North African countries finds that majorities of residents of these countries want the next U.S. president to reduce conflict and tension in the Middle East and find peace in the Israel-Hamas conflict. Majorities of residents in these countries also want the next U.S. president to promote greater economic engagement with their country, be an honest and fair broker of peace in the Middle East and promote greater fair access to all with regards to human rights.
Many across these countries also report following the current U.S. election very or somewhat closely, including majorities in Egypt (75%), Jordan (63%), Lebanon (62%), Saudi Arabia (70%), and the UAE (76%).
Respondents were split on who they preferred to win the U.S. election. Residents of the UAE and residents of Lebanon prefer Republican candidate President Donald Trump to win the election (UAE: 44% Trump, 32% Harris; Lebanon: 41% Trump, 23% Harris). Residents of Egypt and Jordan prefer Democratic candidate Kamala Harris (Egypt: 37% Harris, 32% Trump; Jordan: 38% Harris, 19% Trump). Residents of Egypt and Saudi Arabia were more split (Egypt: 37% Harris, 32% Trump; Saudi Arabia: 29% Harris, 34% Trump).

This poll was conducted by Ipsos from August 2-5, 2024. This poll is based on a sample of 1,000 Egyptian residents, 750 Jordanian residents, 500 Lebanese residents, 648 Saudi Arabian residents, and 1,000 residents of the United Arab Emirates. The samples were sourced from Ipsos proprietary online panels and vetted external vendors. The samples include both native born and expatriates in the country, unless otherwise noted. The data for Lebanon does not include respondents from the southern regions of the country. Quotas were placed on nationally representative gender and age statistics. Soft quotas were placed on region.
