In the latest Reuters/Ipsos Core Political, many are confident in President Trump’s dealing with ISIS/ISIL and his handling of terrorism.

Washington, DC — Following a week focused on foreign conflicts, many are confident in President Trump’s dealing with ISIS/ISIL and his handling of terrorism. It is likely these numbers are tied to recent US action in Syria and the ongoing conflict with North Korea. Despite strong support in certain areas, President Trump’s overall job approval stands at 43%, from 46% when he assumed office. He continues to struggle with approval on his handling of the environment (37% approve) and the way he treats people like me, (39%). President Trump’s handling of taxation also consistently scores only 41% approval, a worrying sign if the Republican Congress pursues tax reform in the coming weeks.  

On the most important issue facing the US today, there’s a statistical tie between the economy, terrorism and healthcare. Notably, there’s an increased focus on war and foreign conflicts, now up to 10% from 3% in our last core political. This number rose most significantly for Democrats, up 10 percentage points since last time. This is also likely tied to the recent focus on foreign policy and US actions in Syria.

These are findings from an Ipsos poll conducted for Thomson Reuters April 13-17, 2017 For the survey, a sample of 1,843 Americans, including 787 Democrats, 650 Republicans, 252 Independents ages 18+ were interviewed online. The precision of the Reuters/Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points for all adults, 4.0 percentage points for Democrats, 4.4 percentage points for Republicans, 7.0 percentage points for Independents. The data were weighted to the U.S. current population data by gender, age, education, and ethnicity. Statistical margins of error are not applicable to online polls. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error and measurement error. Figures marked by an asterisk (*) indicate a percentage value of greater than zero but less than one half of one per cent. Where figures do not sum to 100, this is due to the effects of rounding.
