Washington DC — Broadly speaking, the American public is not happy with the direction of the country, with 58% of adults saying we are off on the wrong track. However, no one single issue dominates their concerns, with terrorism (16%) and healthcare (17%) tied as the most frequently cited issue.
American public approval of President Trump’s job performance remains low, but stable, at 37% - with Republicans continuing to overwhelmingly support the President while most others disapprove.
A week after reporting of White House plans to oust Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, the American public is ranking him as the next most likely to go in the “Ipsos WH-Exit poll”. Currently 22% of Americans say Tillerson is most likely to resign or be terminated followed by previous front-runner Jeff Sessions at 14%.
Also out this week, Ipsos’ Perils of Perception About trend series reveals that Americans consistently assume the worst across a broad range of topics from terrorism and crime to sugar consumption. For example, almost all citizens from the 38 countries surveyed overestimate murder rates in their country.
About the Study
These are findings from an Ipsos poll conducted for Thomson Reuters November December 1-5, 2017. For the survey, a sample of 1,548 Americans, including 545 Democrats, 545 Republicans, 203 Independents ages 18+ were interviewed online. The precision of the Reuters/Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points for all adults, 4.5 percentage points for Democrats, 4.8 percentage points for Republicans, 7.8 percentage points for Independents. The data were weighted to the U.S. current population data by gender, age, education, and ethnicity. Statistical margins of error are not applicable to online polls. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error and measurement error. Figures marked by an asterisk (*) indicate a percentage value of greater than zero but less than one half of one per cent. Where figures do not sum to 100, this is due to the effects of rounding.
