Reuters/Ipsos Poll: Impeachment Vote (12/19/2019)

Half of Americans believe the President is guilty of obstruction of Congress and abuse of power.

Washington, DC, December 19, 2019  Following the House of Representatives’ vote to impeach President Donald Trump on Wednesday night, the latest Reuters/Ipsos poll finds that 2 in 5 Americans (42%) feel the president should now be removed from office. An additional 1 in 5 (17%) believe the president should face censure but not removal from office, while only a quarter feel that the charges should be dismissed (29%) all together. Support for removal from office falls largely along party lines: 7 in 10 Democrats think the president should be removed (72%), compared to just 1 in 10 Republicans (11%). On the specific charges the House voted to impeach the president on, half of Americans think that Trump is guilty of abusing his power as president (53%) and obstructing Congress (51%).

With regards to the impact of impeachment on public opinion, a quarter of Americans (26%) say the process has made them more supportive of the president, 20% say it has made them less supportive, but almost half say it has not influenced their support for him either way (48%). Among the president’s party, half of Republicans (51%) say the ordeal has made them more supportive, a third say there has been no change (34%), and 12% say they now support the president less.

About the Study

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between December 18-19, 2019 on behalf of Thomson Reuters. For this survey, a sample of 1,108 adults age 18+ from the continental U.S., Alaska and Hawaii were interviewed online in English. The sample includes 444 Democrats, 439 Republicans, and 119 independents. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 3.4 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Americans been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error. The poll also has a credibility interval ± 5.3 percentage points for Democrats, ± 5.3 percentage points for Republicans ± 10.2 percentage points for independents.
