Ipsos Core Political: Presidential Approval Tracker (04/15/2021)

Americans are split along party lines on Biden's handling of the nation's top issues

Washington, DC, April 15, 2021 –  The shooting of Daunte Wright in Minnesota this past weekend along with the ongoing Derek Chauvin trial appears to have brought the issue of inequality and discrimination higher up the list of priorities for the U.S., as indicated by this week’s Core Political results. Meanwhile, Republicans remained most concerned about the issue of immigration. Finally, President Biden’s approval remains relatively stable, with 54% of Americans approving of his performance so far.

The economy (17%), immigration (13%), and public health (11%) are still three out of the top four issues that the country is facing today. However, inequality and discrimination (12%) has risen in the rankings, primarily driven by Democrats. Among those who didn’t choose any of the issues below, COVID-19 and divisive politics were most often mentioned.

Main issues Americans are facing

Inequality and discrimination (19%) is now the most important issue for Democrats, followed by a tie between public health and the economy (both 16%). Among Republicans, immigration (24%) continues to be the top priority, followed by the economy (20%) and morality (9%). Finally, the economy is most pressing for independents (15%), followed by a tie between immigration and inequality and discrimination (both 12%).

Priorities

Making the economy a priority appears to be something all can agree on, regardless of political party identification. While 47% of Democrats and 41% of independents would like Biden to prioritize COVID-19, only 24% of Republicans are concerned. On the other hand, 41% of Republicans want Biden to prioritize immigration, but only 11% of Democrats and 17% of independents think it is a priority. Finally, 27% of Democrats want racial inequality to be a priority, but only 4% of Republicans and 11% of independents think Biden should prioritize it.

About the Study

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between April 14-15, 2021. For this survey, a sample of 1,005 Americans age 18+ from the continental U.S., Alaska, and Hawaii were interviewed online in English. The sample includes 441 Democrats, 378 Republicans, and 111 independents. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 3.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Americans been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including but not limited to coverage error and measurement error. The poll also has a credibility interval of ± 5.3 percentage points for Democrats, ± 5.7 percentage points for Republicans, and ± 10.6 percentage points for independents.
