Washington, DC, October 13, 2023 – A new Ipsos poll for the Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) finds that about three-quarters of Americans (74%) say they are dietary or nutritional supplement users, a trend that is consistent with previous years. Just over half of Americans (55%) report being regular supplement users. Seventy-four percent of Americans and 83% of dietary supplement users say they trust the dietary supplement industry, a level of trust that has remained relatively consistent over time. When it comes to maintaining their health, about nine in ten (92%) supplement users agree that dietary supplements are essential.

Additionally, their confidence in the safety and quality of sports nutrition and weight management supplements has slightly increased since 2022. Now, 66% of supplement users say they are confident in the safety and quality of sports nutrition supplements, up five percentage points. Fifty-six percent say the same about weight management supplements, up four percentage points.

About the Study

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between August 9-14, 2023, on behalf of the Council for Responsible Nutrition. For this survey, a sample of 3,192 adults age 18+ from the continental U.S., Alaska, and Hawaii was interviewed online in English. The sample also includes 2,328 adults who consume dietary supplements seasonally, occasionally, or regularly as well as 864 non-users of supplements.

The sample was randomly drawn from Ipsos’ online panel, partner online panel sources, and “river” sampling and does not rely on a population frame in the traditional sense. Ipsos uses fixed sample targets, unique to each study, in drawing a sample. After a sample has been obtained from the Ipsos panel, Ipsos calibrates respondent characteristics to be representative of the U.S. Population using standard procedures such as raking-ratio adjustments. The source of these population targets is U.S. Census 2019 American Community Survey data. The sample drawn for this study reflects fixed sample targets on demographics. Posthoc weights were made to the population characteristics on gender, age, race/ethnicity, region, and income.

Statistical margins of error are not applicable to online non-probability polls. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error and measurement error. Where figures do not sum to 100, this is due to the effects of rounding. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 2.1 percentage points for all respondents. The poll also has a credibility interval of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points for supplement users and a credibility interval of plus or minus 4.1 percentage points for non-users of supplements. Ipsos calculates a design effect (DEFF) for each study based on the variation of the weights, following the formula of Kish (1965). This study had a credibility interval adjusted for the design effect of the following (n=3,192, DEFF=1.5, adjusted Confidence Interval=+/-3.6 percentage points).
