2 in 5 Americans agree the U.S. should do more to take in refugees

A recent Ipsos poll finds that nearly a third of Americans say they'd have a better opinion of companies who hired refugees

Washington D.C., June 24, 2022 - A new Ipsos poll finds most Americans support the U.S. admitting refugees from Ukraine who are fleeing the war (79%), Afghan refugees fleeing the Taliban (66%), and Central Americans fleeing violence and poverty (64%). Overall, 45% of Americans say the United States should be doing more to take in refugees.

Regarding admitting refugees into the workforce, 58% of Americans say it would make no difference to them if a company hired refugees. In comparison, 32% say it would give them a better opinion of that company. Only 10% say they'd have a worse opinion. A quarter of Americans say they'd have a better impression of their employer if they hired refugees, while 40% say it would make no difference.

Finally, 79% of Americans say there are plenty of jobs right now for anyone who wants one. Still, if jobs are scarce, 64% agree that employers should prioritize hiring people of this country over refugees.

About the Study

These are some of the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between June 21-22, 2022. For this survey, a sample of 1,000 Americans age 18+ from the continental U.S., Alaska, and Hawaii were interviewed online in English. Weighting was then employed to balance demographics to ensure that the sample's composition reflects that of the adult population according to Census data and to provide results intended to approximate the sample universe. The precision of Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll is accurate to within ± 4.0 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, had all Americans been polled. The credibility interval will be wider among subsets of the population. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including but not limited to coverage error and measurement error.
