Ipsos - Understanding Society: What is the real cost of the cost of living crisis?

As 2022 draws to a close, we would like to share with you our end of year Understanding Society report – a tradition at Ipsos where our Public Affairs team takes a deep dive into a topic that has defined our society, drawing on our wealth of public opinion research and interviews with key experts.

And this year, there is no doubt that the cost of living crisis has had, and continues to have, a significant impact on the daily lives of many Britons, dominating our longstanding Issues Index for most of 2022 in a way that we have not seen for 40 years.

In this edition of Understanding Society, we explore how the UK public is reacting to the cost of living pressures, what policy solutions are being debated, and what government needs to consider both to alleviate the immediate pressures but also to achieve its longer-term goals in areas such as health, housing, environment and levelling up. We are joined by two leading economists, Dr Linda Yueh and Mike Brewer, to give their take on the lessons from previous crisis and the importance of an equitable recovery.
