The car defined the 20th century. What defines mobility in the 21st?

A quarter of the way through the current century, driving remains the preferred way to travel in 22 out of 31 countries covered in our new research. But this doesn’t mean people are rejecting public transport, which people find safe and accessible, with clear environmental benefits.

Car manufacturers are scrambling to transform their product offer, respond to the challenges of new entrants and re-think their messaging. Meanwhile, questions of data privacy, infrastructure investment, and policy backlash are reshaping how governments regulate and legislate.

All of this is playing out in today’s era of geopolitical fragmentation, technological disruption, and an increasingly polarised societal context.

The world is in motion – but will it be in the direction we expect?

At our next KEYS webinar, we’ll be launching the inaugural Ipsos Mobility Report

On the agenda:

  • The Death of Car Ownership? The data says not yet – but cracks are showing. It’s a good moment to look at the "trapped owner" phenomenon, the infrastructure gap keeping many people car-dependent. We explore opportunities for service providers – as well as the role governments and local authorities can play.
  • Electric Vehicles: A Reality Check. EVs now account for more than half of new car sales in China. But levels of enthusiasm are much lower in North America and many parts of Europe. Just what are the dynamics at work here – and what will the next few years bring?
  • Trust, Tech and Geopolitics: Cars stacked with computing kit raise privacy concerns. The prospect of self-driving cars makes many people uneasy. And today’s car choices are becoming political: more than half say they would avoid an automaker based on its nationality.
  • Communications on the Move: We show how a “Misfits Mindset” can help advertisers stand out from the sea of sameness, break free from traditional approaches showing features and benefits, and truly strike a chord with today’s consumers and citizens.

We do hope you will be able to join us.
