The Childcare And Early Years Workforce Survey 2002/03
MORI Social Research Institute conducted The 2002/03 Childcare & Early Years Workforce Survey on behalf of the Department for Education and Skills. The Survey tracks changes in the workforce since 2001 among different kinds of provision in the childcare sector and collects baseline data for the early years sector for the first time.
The specific issues covered in this survey are: the number of places; the number of children enrolled; overall business operation and performance; the numbers and characteristics of employees; training; qualifications; and recruitment and retention.
Detailed reports outlining the findings of the research for the different types of provision can be downloaded from this site. An Overview report draws together the main findings from each of these types of provision and highlights the key issues across the Childcare and Early Years sectors.
Technical details
MORI conducted 850 interviews amongst each of the Childcare and Early Years audiences, with the exception of Nursery Schools were 200 interviews were conducted.
Sample was stratified by region for all audiences (except nursery schools). Samples for early years audiences were ordered, within each region, by local authority area, and then by level of deprivation, level of rurality and number of children, before leads were selected at random. Samples for childcare audiences were ordered, within each region, by childcare information service area, and then level of deprivation and level of rurality, before leads were selected at random. Broad quotas were set by level of deprivation, and level of rurality.
At the analysis stage data was weighted by region and figures were grossed up to the current estimated national totals of providers across the country.
Interviews were conducted by telephone using CATI between 9 December 2002 and 12 May 2003.
