Ipsos poll on 'smeargate' for the News of the World

Ipsos carried out a survey for the News of the World, looking at public attitudes to the recent email 'smear campaign' countroversy.

Ipsos carried out a survey for the News of the World, looking at public attitudes to the recent email 'smear campaign' countroversy.

The survey found that two in five (39%) agree that Gordon Brown's leadership style is to blame for the actions of those planning the smear campaign. A similar figure (37%) feel that this controversy has reduced their trust in the Labour Government though three-quarters (72%) also feel that both Conservative and Labour are equally likely to engage in this type of behaviour. And more than half (54%) say that issues like these ones are important to them when they decide which party to vote for.

Technical Note Ipsos interviewed a representative sample of 1,021 British adults aged 18 and over by telephone on 17th April 2009.
