Ipsos/ Reuters Poll: Herman Cain's Ratings Post Press Conference

Washington, DC - Ipsos has undertaken a third overnight poll on behalf of Thomson Reuters on the subject of Republican Presidential Candidate Herman Cain. This poll, published today, showed participants a video excerpt from yesterday's press conference with Sharon Bialek, who has accused Cain of inappropriate behavior.

The poll is among Republican Registered Voters, and finds that two in five (39%) believe that the allegations presented by Bialek are true - and an equal number believe they are untrue (38%). In addition, 40% say that watching the video makes them less favorable towards Herman Cain.

The poll also asked Republican Registered Voters how they would vote if the 2012 Republican Primaries were being held today, and participants were asked this question both before and after seeing the video. We found no real change in reported voting behavior after seeing the video: 21% say they will vote for Cain before viewing the video, and 19% choose Cain after seeing the video. It seems that Cain's base may support him regardless of recent allegations brought against him. However, given the proportion of Republicans whose view of Cain has been negatively impacted by Bialek's statement and the controversy more generally, it now appears unlikely Cain will be able to expand his support beyond its current level (or even maintain it at this level), which puts him solidly in second place to Romney - with Gingrich now bringing up a closer third.

These findings are from an online omnibus survey of 462 Republican Registered Voters. Individuals were interviewed via a U.S. online household panel. Data were collected via a national survey, including a screener for registered voters. The data were weighted to the national profile of registered voters, and then a filter was applied on Republicans. The survey was conducted November 7-8, 2011. Statistical margins of error are not applicable to online polls. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error and measurement error. Figures marked by an asterisk (*) indicate a percentage value of greater than zero but less than one half of a per cent. Where figures do not sum to 100, this is due to the effects of rounding.
