More plan to shop only online, but also say it’s important to shop local

People say it's important to support locally owned stores — but they also plan to shop mostly online this holiday season, according to the Ipsos Consumer Tracker.

The Ipsos Consumer Tracker asks Americans questions about culture, the economy and the forces that shape our lives. Here's one thing we learned this week.

Why we asked: ‘Tis the season.

What we found: This is now our fifth year tracking holiday spending in the Covid-Consumer Tracker. For the first several years, we didn’t see much movement in this question. But this year two data points shifted, and the combination is rather interesting. First, there’s an uptick in those who say they will mostly shop online compared to previous years. But there’s also an uptick in those saying it’s important to support locally owned stores this holiday season. Lots of implications here for retailers both online and not, and also for the physical locations of big boxes and chains.
