Why Americans will be happy with their gifts this holiday season

The gifts Americans plan to give are closely aligned with what Americans want to receive, according to new data from the Ipsos Consumer Tracker

The Ipsos Consumer Tracker asks Americans questions about culture, the economy and the forces that shape our lives. Here's one thing we learned this week.

Chart showing that gift cards are the most popular gifts to give as well as receive

Why we asked about the gifts people want to receive: In the last wave, we trended a question about what gifts folks are planning to give this holiday season. My colleague Kate MacArthur suggested an astute follow-up: What do people want to receive?

What we found: Whew. Good news, gift-givers. What we plan to give mostly lines up with what folks want to get. We’re a tiny bit less enthused for the gift cards that are projected to be the most-gifted item. And we’re not as excited for clothing and apparel (perhaps scarred from all the socks and underwear as kids). Interestingly, gaming devices are more popular to give than receive (my household is an outlier here). But for the most part, there is solid alignment, so I guess we’ve been making our lists and checking them twice.
