In our latest Ipsos Research Highlights we explore this months the Issues Index, satisfaction with the Government, and how the public is handling the cost-of-living crisis.

Half of Britons say Conservatives made the wrong decision by voting to keep Boris Johnson as Prime Minister

Following Boris Johnson’s confidence vote this week, 51% of the British public believe Conservative MPs made the wrong decision by voting to keep him in office. When the public consider the PM's around 6 in 10 say it is unlikely he will be able to win the next General Election (59%) or unite the Conservative party under his leadership (64%). However, there is still no obvious public consensus as to who should replace him.

Number of Britons who think government not doing enough on cost of living falls

As the cost-of-living crisis continues, half of Britons want more support from their government, with 49% saying they are not helping people enough through the cost-of-living crisis. Following recent measures announced by Chancellor Rishi Sunak to tackle the issue, the proportion of Britons that think not enough is being done has fallen from 76% in early May to 49% now. However, the public are split on whether Sunak himself is doing a good job as Chancellor.

Issues Index May 2022

This month Issues Index finds public concern about inflation now at a 40-year maximum, with 41% mentioning it as a concern, up nine points from last month. Some groups such as those aged 35-44 (51%) and people who own their home on a mortgage (49%) in particular are significantly more likely than average to mention inflation as a worry. The wider economy remains the second cited issue this month on similar scores to April: just over a quarter are worried about the economy (27%).

Half of Britons believe Prince Charles will be a good king, even as two-thirds want the Queen to remain Monarch for as long as possible

Following a weekend of celebrations for the Jubilee, we’ve looked at the future of the Royal Family and the next on the throne. Half of Britons expect Prince Charles to do a good job as King and only one in five do not. We've also asked the public what Britons expect him to achieve if he does take the throne. While 68% say he is likely to use his position to raise the awareness of climate change, Britons are divided as to whether Prince Charles is likely to modernise the monarchy.

I have recently been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for services to Academia, Research and the COVID-19 response. Two years after George Floyds murder, in in collaboration with the Financial Times, we’ve looked at how companies have changed their approach to race related issues in the workplace. We've found that although it alerted employers into identifying ways to improve race relations, this has not been translated into sustained and impactful actions for workers. 

Half of Britons also believe there is not enough affordable housing available in their local area and over three-quarters (76%) agree that young people will struggle to get the right kind of housing, despite working hard and getting a good job.
