Americans aren’t buying the benefits of tariffs

A sizable majority of Americans say that tariffs will lead to higher prices, according to new data from the Ipsos Consumer Tracker.

The Ipsos Consumer Tracker asks Americans questions about culture, the economy and the forces that shape our lives. Here's one thing we learned this week.

Chart showing that 74 percent of Americans think tariffs will raise prices on the things they buy

Why we asked: While tariffs haven’t been quite as much in the headlines these days, their impacts persist.

What we found: If one of the big ideas behind tariffs is to encourage more re-shoring of U.S. manufacturing jobs, people aren’t buying it yet. What they ARE buying is more expensive goods.

A significant number of Americans (42%) disagree that tariffs will lead to more jobs in the U.S., while only 28% (42% of Republicans) agree it’s a job creator. Meanwhile, a sizable majority (73%, even 60% of Republicans) say that tariffs will lead to higher prices and 67% say they are already paying higher prices. Only 35% think tariffs are worth it, with just half of Republicans (52%) agreeing and only one in five (22%) of Democrats.
