When you look at main issues this election, healthcare and immigration are equally likely to factor into the vote, but are split by party. This means the President did an equally good job of turning out his base to vote. Trump fired up his base using the image of a migrant Caravan because he needed to find outrage to match Democrat outrage at him. A message on the economy wouldn’t have resonated with his base.
C-Span, November 13, 2018—Cliff Young, President of Ipsos Public Affairs, discusses the 2018 Midterm Elections. Ipsos found that both the Republican and Democrat bases were very energized the day of, but driven by different issues. Whereas is 2014, the main issue was economy and jobs, this election it was about immigration for Republicans and healthcare for Democrats. Independents were concerned about a mixed bag of issues. Despite a historic voter turnout not seen since the 1960s, we also saw starkly partisan division among rural vs. urban. Women skewed strongly Democrat, which was expected, based on earlier polls.
