When you look at main issues this election, healthcare and immigration are equally likely to factor into the vote, but are split by party. This means the President did an equally good job of turning out his base to vote. Trump fired up his base using the image of a migrant Caravan because he needed to find outrage to match Democrat outrage at him. A message on the economy wouldn’t have resonated with his base.

Ipsos found that both the Republican and Democrat bases were very energized the day of, but driven by different issues. Whereas is 2014, the main issue was economy and jobs, this election it was about immigration for Republicans and healthcare for Democrats. Independents were concerned about a mixed bag of issues. Despite a historic voter turnout not seen since the 1960s, we also saw starkly partisan division among rural vs. urban. Women skewed strongly Democrat, which was expected, based on earlier polls.

Larry Sabato of the University of Virginia Center for Politics and Cliff Young of Ipsos teamed up to create the multi-source election forecasting tool Political Atlas, a website that provided daily updates for every congressional, senate, and gubernatorial race in the country through polling and social media data, combined with expert assessments.
Cliff discussed the role of women in the Midterm Elections. More women than average were expected to vote, especially white women in suburbia and African American women in urban areas. Trump is negatively energizing the Democrats, especially women.
