Innovation in Large-Scale Nutrition Surveys

Lessons from the Bottom of the Pyramid Study - Since 2015 Ipsos Healthcare in UK have been conducting research on nutrition in India, Bangladesh and Nigeria, a summary of which is now available.

Over the past three years the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, in collaboration with Ipsos, has been studying the lives of people living at the bottom of the socio-economic pyramid in Uttar Pradesh, Bangladesh and Nigeria. Through multiple phases of research we have developed a deep understanding of their sources of income, food consumption, future aspirations, and attitudes and behaviours around nutrition, as well as how people in these countries interact with fortified and branded goods. Our data is intended to support those who have an interest in the wellbeing of those living at the bottom of the pyramid, with particular emphasis on improving nutritional outcomes. The session will be relevant to anyone in this field, including public health professionals, programme implementers and marketers and branding experts in the private sector.

Along with a webinar and website, this report outlines the background of the research, the practicalities of collecting these types of data and recommendations for undertaking this kind of research again in the future.
