There is something peculiarly British about a relaunch. It may well be because as a nation we are increasingly (and proudly) fickle, one minute booing the thing we will then fast-track to sainthood - witness the tabloid press and the Great British Public over Michael Jackson or Princess Diana.

Sometimes when you're in a hole, stopping digging is one answer, but it's not the whole answer. Testing for myopia may help, but sometimes a blinkered digger just cannot see another possibility or direction. Skoda's long slow decline in the second half of the 20th Century seemed to be following the same fate as the Austria-Hungary dynasty, with its golden age perversely in World War One (where a Skoda tank was something to be feared, not derided).

More recently, it seemed that the last rites were about to be administered to the Evening Standard in the face of the frequently derided "bubblegum and mind-rotting" freesheets, such as the London Paper and the London Lite...
