Modern Milestones: Why it's critical to think in life stages

Ipsos Views: What matters more in understanding people: when they were born, or where they are in life?

The temptation to rely on generations as a shorthand for understanding people remains as strong as ever. But are we focusing too much on generations and not enough on life stages? While generational labels can provide useful context, they can also obscure a more important reality: often it’s people’s life stages that play a bigger role in their needs, priorities, and behaviors.

Today, timelines are shifting and the traditional life cycle has been disrupted. Around the world, people are getting married, starting families, and buying homes later in life than previous generations. At the same time, older people are enjoying a longer period of post-retirement life, as their lifespan increases.

Combined with economic pressures, these demographic changes are extending some life stages and compressing others, while entirely new life stages are emerging in new spaces that these shifts have created.

These milestones – getting a driver’s license, graduating college, getting married, having kids, buying homes and retiring – all represent major changes in our lives. Each of those changes heralds a new set of responsibilities and a new spending pattern for goods and services.

For organizations planning for the future, the implications are profound. Life stages influence everything from housing and healthcare to financial services, technology, travel and retail. As milestones shift, so too do spending patterns, expectations and the ways people engage with brands.
