Resettlement: Living Situation in the First Country of Asylum

The study examines the living situation of refugees in first asylum countries or other third countries. Information is collected on socio-demographic characteristics, education and occupation, language use, housing situation, family situation, social participation and social contacts. In addition, the awareness of aid and reception programs such as the resettlement program is examined. Furthermore, experiences of flight and intentions to migrate onwards are also surveyed. The aim is to obtain reliable information from refugees, primarily in first asylum countries, but also beyond that in other third countries.

Participation in the survey is voluntary and currently only possible if you have received a link to participate from people you know. In this case, we ask you to participate in the survey once. Of course, you can terminate your participation in this study at any time and without giving reasons. This will not in any disadvantages for you.

Each person participating in the survey can invite 3 people. These people must be refugees and currently residing in a first asylum country or another third country. Further information on the survey will be provided to you when you receive a participation link on your smartphone.

Study procedure - What exactly awaits you in this study?

The online survey takes about 25 minutes and can be accessed via any standard browser. We will ask you for personal information such as your age and temporarily store some technical data for quality assurance. However, this data will be deleted later. If you participate, you will not be identifiable as a person. Your data will be stored securely on German servers and you can contact us if you have any questions about data protection.

Your task is to answer questions on the subject areas described in the study purpose to the best of your knowledge and belief.

Benefits and risks

Your participation helps us to better understand the living situation of refugees in different countries. This enables recommendations for better reception programs. Participation is voluntary, unpaid and has no influence on your resettlement.
The questionnaire also includes questions about your experiences of flight. You can answer these in general categories or skip them. You also have the option of discontinuing the survey at any time or contacting us using the contact details above. One point of contact that can help you with concrete problems on the ground are the UNHCR facilities.

Data protection and data use

Your data will be treated confidentially. You can interrupt the survey at any time and continue later via the link. After the survey period, the links are no longer valid. The results will be published in scientific journals. The anonymized data will later be made available to the scientific community via the BAMF Research Data Center. This will ensure that no conclusions can be drawn about individual persons and that the data will only be used for scientific purposes.
