In recent years the issue of national identity has moved up a notch in the political agenda not least in part due to 9/11, the devolution in Scotland and Wales, European integration, Britain's involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq, and a rise in immigration focussing attention on multiculturalism, diversity and its relationship with a national identity.

    The English Are In Favour Of A National Day Of Celebration On St George's Day

    Findings from an Ipsos survey commissioned by the Chairman and National Organiser of the St George's Day Celebrations, Bruno Peek show that the English public are keen to celebrate St George's Day on April 23 with a national day of celebration. Three-quarters (74%) of us think it's a good idea and seven in ten (72%) are keen for the day to be made into a bank holiday. Three charities: RNID, the charity for deaf and hard of hearing people, AICR and RVS are benefiting from the money raised by the celebrations.

    Public Attitudes To Parenting

    The public believe that better parenting is key to reducing crime and anti-social behaviour in Britain according to a new poll by the Ipsos Social Research Institute. A failure to bring up children properly is felt the main cause of anti-social behaviour today and the public are keen for steps to be taken. The large majority believe that parents should be held responsible for the bad behaviour of their children and be made to take help if their child is involved in anti-social behaviour. Two-thirds of parents say they would personally find help from outside their friends and family useful in dealing with difficult or troublesome behaviour of their children.

    Parties For The Public Good

    Research conducted by Ipsos for the Young Foundation shows that the British public believe political parties have an important role to play in democracy. Half the public (49%) say that political parties in Britain enable the people to have a voice; and a similar number also disagree that Britain would be better off if political parties did not exist and all politicians were independent. At the same time, fewer than a quarter believe that parties are open and transparent, and the most popular approaches to making parties more appealing would be for them to involve people more in local decision making and for them to listen more to the public.
