    Attitudes Of Londoners To The Public Smoking Ban

    The vast majority of Londoners (83%) support the Government's ban on smoking in public places according to an Ipsos survey for The Evening Standard. The research shows that most people (72%) strongly support such a ban; with only a small proportion of the public as a whole opposed to the ban (12%). Even among smokers, a clear majority are in favour of the ban (64%).

    More of the public are satisfied with the way Gordon Brown is doing his job as Chancellor of the Exchequer than are satisfied with the performance of any of the three party leaders. However, Gordon Brown's personal ratings are the lowest recorded by Ipsos since 1997 with the exception of the fuel crisis in late 2000.

    MORI's final poll of the 2005 election campaign, published in the London Evening Standard on election day, predicted the Conservative and Liberal Democrat shares of the vote spot-on, and missed Labour by two percentage points - an average error of 0.67 points on the three major parties, well within the normally accepted margins of error.

    Attitudes to Nuclear Energy

    New research for the Nuclear Industry Association shows that 72% of the British public agree that the UK needs a mix of energy sources to ensure a reliable supply of electricity, including nuclear power and renewable energy sources. When asked specifically about nuclear newbuild, to ensure the same proportion of nuclear energy is retained, 39% would support it while 29% would oppose it. The remainder are undecided.
