    Energy Issues Research

Research by MORI for EDF Energy shows that the British public places great emphasis on combating global warming: 79% agree that the most important thing is to reduce global warming by producing less carbon dioxide. They also value self sufficiency for the UK — 83% would like us to aim to be self sufficient in energy. However there is a weaker consensus over how these aims should be achieved.

In addition, those aged under 25 were asked two questions about wanting and being able to buy a home of their own in the future.

    Hebridean Windfarm Plans

Research by MORI Scotland shows virtually all (99%) residents on Lewis and North Harris are aware of the proposals to build windfarms on the islands. People who think they will be able to see both the pylons and turbines of their local windfarm are the most opposed to the principle of their construction — three quarters (75%) of people in this group oppose the windfarms (and 19% supports). Half (48%) of those who don't think they will be able to see evidence of the windfarm are in favour, and a third (32%) opposed.

Saving The World Will Have To Wait - Most Americans Need Convincing

Britons are now much more willing to take action to reduce climate change than Americans, who remain unconvinced of the need to change their behaviour, despite being the world's biggest polluter. Recent research by MORI for the Climate Group shows that Great Britain's population is more willing to consider 'acting now' to tackle climate change than is the US (63% vs 46%). By contrast, Americans are more hesitant, saying that 'wait & see' is the preferable course of action (41% vs 27% in Britain).

    Young People And Healthy Living

"My Body, My Self" is the second study from the Nestlé Social Research Programme, with data collected by MORI. It looks at young people's values and motives about a healthy lifestyle. The study is full of fascinating facts about a generation whose awareness of health risks seems not always to be reflected in their behaviour. There are marked differences between the sexes, especially when it comes to exercise and what motivates young people to take part in physical activities. The summary goes on to suggest that the key for this age group seems to be either enjoyment of the activity or how it improves their appearance.

Public Opposition To 'Unfair' Inheritance Tax

MORE than two thirds of British people (69%) think it unfair to tax a person's estate after their death, according to new research from MORI. The survey, for Friends Provident, looks at views on inheritance tax, it's fairness as a means of generating tax revenues, and whether the current threshold (£263,000) is considered correct. Most people (57%) think the threshold should be raised and two thirds (67%) believe a 'banding' system should be introduced, so that smaller amounts attract a lower rate and larger sums a higher rate.
