Issues Index February 2009

Ipsos's February Issues Index shows that the economy remains the most important issue facing Britain as far as the public are concerned. However, the percentage of those saying the economy is among the most important issues facing Britain (67%) has decreased since last month (when it peaked at 70%). This is the first time since July 2008 that there has been a drop (albeit a small one) in the number concerned about the economy. Crime remains in second place, cited as an important issue by a third (32%) of the public.

However, the percentage of those saying the economy is among the most important issues facing Britain (67%) has decreased since last month (when it peaked at 70%). This is the first time since July 2008 that there has been a drop (albeit a small one) in the number concerned about the economy. Crime remains in second place, cited as an important issue by a third (32%) of the public. Despite the continuing news reports about redundancies, the percentage of Britons citing unemployment as among the country's main issues (23%) has remained steady since January. Race relations/immigration is now the third most important issue facing Britain. Ipsos interviewed a representative quota sample of 995 adults aged 18+ at 206 sampling points across Great Britain.

Interviews were conducted face-to-face on 19th-24th February 2009. Data are weighted to match the profile of the population.
