Public Services and Choice Poll

People are losing trust in Labour's ability to improve the economy and public services, according to a new survey by the MORI Social Research Institute. The general public are just as likely to trust the Conservatives to do the best job of improving the economy, education and transport in this country, as they are to trust Labour. Only a third (32%) believe that the Government's policies will improve the state of Britain's economy, and only just over a quarter (28%) believe that they will improve public services, down from 54% in 2001.

In 1997, Tony Blair claimed that 'Things could only get better', and a fifth (21%) now agree that things have changed for the better, both for them personally, and for the country as a whole. However, a third (32%) of people believe things have got worse for them personally, and 44% believe things have got worse for Britain as a whole.

Topline Results

  • Results are based on 1,003 interviews conducted by MORI with a representative sample of residents aged 18+ across Great Britain
  • Interviews were conducted by telephone between 7-8 July 2003.
  • Data are weighted by gender, age, class, region, work status and tenure to the known profile of Great Britain.
  • Where results do not sum to 100%, this may be due to multiple responses, computer rounding or the exclusion of 'don't know/not stated' response categories.
  • Where there are small bases (less than 30 respondents) responses are given in absolute figures rather than percentage answers.
