Toronto's Burb's Believe Their City Government Doesn't Care, Neglects Them but Downtowners Beg to Differ

Forever thus...?

Toronto, ON - A new Ipsos Reid poll conducted on behalf of NewsTalk 1010 has revealed that half of Torontonians (48%) feel that Toronto's government doesn't care about their part of town (24% strongly/24% somewhat agree) compared to the other half (48% - 19% strongly/29% somewhat disagree) who feel that Toronto's city government does care about their part of town.

But a regional perspective is more revealing: people who live in the city core (30%) are least likely to feel the city government doesn't care about them whereas those most likely to agree that Toronto's government doesn't care about their part of town are in Scarborough (71%) followed by York/East York (51%), North York (48%) and Etobicoke (45%). Among political supporters, those most likely to agree are represented in ranked order by Rocco Rossi 61%, Rob Ford 60%, George Smitherman 40% and Joe Pantalone 34%.

Almost the same pattern emerges when considering whether or not the Toronto city government neglects the suburbs: 52% believe this to be the case and compares to 39% who disagree and one in 10 (9%) who offer "don't know".

Those most likely to believe that Toronto's city government neglects the suburbs are from the suburbs: Scarborough (63%) followed by Etobicoke (56%), North York (54%) and York/East York (51%)...with the Toronto city core least likely to believe so (39%). Among political supporters, those most likely to agree with the view that the suburbs are neglected side with candidates Rocco Rossi 61% and Rob Ford 62% and, to a lesser extent, George Smitherman 44% and Joe Pantalone 43%.

These are the findings of an Ipsos Reid poll conducted on behalf of NewsTalk 1010 from October 8-10, 2010. For the survey, a representative randomly-selected sample of 400 adults living in Toronto was interviewed by telephone. With a sample of this size, the results are considered accurate to within 1774.9 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire adult population of Toronto proper been polled. The margin of error will be larger within regions and for other sub-groupings of the survey population. These data were weighted to ensure that the sample's regional and age/sex composition reflects that of the actual Toronto population according to Census data. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error, and measurement error.
