Before Oscar Nominations, Americans Most Likely to Pick Lincoln, Les Misйrables as Top Contenders
At the same time, a majority (52%) report that they didn't see any of the 24 movies vying for an Oscar nomination. Likewise, very few have actually seen many of the nominated films, with 1% or less saying that they have watched Amour, Beasts of the Southern Wild, and Silver Linings Playbook.
Anne Hathaway was the most popular choice for Best Actress for her role in Les Misйrables, selected by over a quarter of Americans (27%), though she was nominated in the Supporting Actress category. Another popular choice for Best Actress include Meryl Streep for Hope Springs (15%), though she wasn't nominated for her performance. Very few selected any of the nominated actresses - Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook), Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty), Naomi Watts (The Impossible), Emmanuelle Riva (Amour), Quvenzhanй Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) - as their favorite to win.
In the Best Actor category, Daniel Day Lewis is the favorite for his role as Lincoln (18%), followed by Denzel Washington for Flight (16%) and High Jackman for Les Misйrables (10%), all of whom earned a nomination.
These are findings from an Ipsos poll conducted for Thomson Reuters from January 8-9, 2013 . For the survey, a sample of 951 Americans ages 18+ were interviewed online. The precision of the Reuters/Ipsos online polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, the poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points. The data were weighted to the U.S. current population data by gender, age, education, and ethnicity. Statistical margins of error are not applicable to online polls. All sample surveys and polls may be subject to other sources of error, including, but not limited to coverage error and measurement error. Figures marked by an asterisk (*) indicate a percentage value of greater than zero but less than one half of one per cent. Where figures do not sum to 100, this is due to the effects of rounding.
